Law finally catches up with Sandys man ? after four years
A Sandys man pleaded guilty to an offence committed four years ago.
Eugene Gibbons, 25, yesterday pleaded guilty to possession of cannabis and not guilty to driving 92 kph back in September 2002. It was not explained in court why the charges were brought to him four years after the offence.
Magistrates? Court heard the defendant fell asleep in a cab and was woken up by a Police officer telling him to pay the driver for his services. Gibbons allegedly yelled to the officer, ?I?m in f*****g town?.
When he was told to pay the driver, the defendant punched the officer and it took several officers to restrain him. When he was taken to the Hamilton Police Station, he was searched and officers found a clear plastic twist which was later revealed to be 1.05 grams of cannabis.
In his explanation to Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo, Gibbons said: ?I apologise for whatever they think might have happened. I had a little to drink.?
He explained that he told the driver he was going to Southampton and he was taken to Hamilton instead. ?If he weren?t going to take me there [Southampton he shouldn?t have stopped.?
Gibbons also explained the cannabis was for personal use and it was something he no longer did.
The offensive words charges were dropped due to lack of evidence.
Magistrate Tokunbo gave the defendant a conditional discharge for one year.
Gibbons was also accused of speeding. His trial will take place on January 5. He is bailed in the amount of $5000.
Drink leads to driving ban and fine
A Pembroke man who claimed he did not know the alcoholic content in his drinks was handed a hefty fine and a one-year driving ban.
Betram Fraser, 45 of North Shore Road was seen driving down North Shore Road in Pembroke by Police. His car hit a telephone pole on the same road and he left the scene afterwards.
Officers went to Fraser?s home to question him about the accident and when the defendant began answering questions, officers smelled alcohol on his breath.
When he was asked, he admitted to having had a drink and he was arrested. A breathalyser test showed he had 143 millilitres of alcohol in 100 milligrams of blood.
In his explanation to Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo, Fraser explained he had drunk two alcoholic drinks both containing Red Bull and a shrimp cocktail.
?I was definitely not aware of the amount of alcohol in the drink?, he said.
He pleaded guilty to impaired driving and was fined $800 to be paid by January 19 or 80 days in default. He was also disqualified from driving any vehicle for a year.
Cursing the Police proves costly exercise
A St. George?s man who claimed he did not remember cursing Police officers received a $500 fine.
Michael Minors, 62, of Cove Valley, was arrested on September 12 for the incident that happened in King Square, St. George?s, on the same day.
In the summary read by Crown counsel Cindy Clarke, Magistrate?s Court heard Minors and another man were standing outside of Carole Holding Studio next to the White Horse Pub and Restaurant. The two men were observed shouting obscenities to each other and to tourists and people passing by.
Police officers approached Minors and arrested him for offensive words. The court was told Minors said: ?F*** you. I wasn?t cursing, F*** off.?
Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo gave him a $500 fine.
Food thief threatens store manager
A Sandys man was fined $1,000 in Magistrates Court for stealing food and using offensive words.
Deshaun Dill, 19, of Farmstead Lane, was arrested on September 5 in Maxi Mart parking lot in Sandys.
In the summary read by Crown counsel Carrington Mahoney, the defendant was seen in the cold drinks section of the store. He was seen picking up various food items including a slice of pizza which he placed in his back left pants pocket, and a steak which was put in the front right pocket.
Dill went to the cashier and paid for one item which was not named and left the store.
The defendant was approached by the manager who took the items from his pockets. Police officers came to the store as the defendant was attempting to escape.
The court heard that Dill told the manager: ?I?m going to mess you up and if I do time then I?m going to get you. I swear to God I?m f*****g coming back tomorrow to kill you?.
In his explanation, the defendant said the manager had put his hands on him for an unknown reason. He also explained that he was drunk at the time.
Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo fined him $500 for stealing and $500 for using threatening words. Dill pleaded guilty to both.
