Sandys man fined for stealing DVDs

A Sandys parish man was forced to reimburse a movie rental shop after stealing two DVDs from its shelves.

Shawn Dion Milan Smith, 35, entered the Double W Home Entertainment shop on June 1 and left the store with DVDs — "Ghost Rider" and "The Messengers", inside his pocket. The theft was caught on the store's security cameras.

Smith apologised to Magistrates' Court for his actions and explained that it was "out of character". He was ordered to reimburse the store in the value of the stolen property $60, and was fined an additional $300 to be paid by September 7.

Homophobic attack earns six months

A Warwick man will spend six months in jail after attacking and seriously injuring a man.

Aswad Wilson, 23, of Spice Berry Lane, admitted to causing Franklin James grievous bodily harm on July 12.

Magistrates' Court heard that Wilson was with some friends outside Hayward's Supermarket, in Warwick, when he spotted the victim walking towards the bus stop.

Wilson told the man: "I hear you are hanging out with a bunch of f*****ts", before tripping him to the ground and kicking him in the face.

The victim's right eye socket was fractured.

Wilson was given six months for the attack and an additional two months for another incident involving his brother, to run concurrently with two years on probation after serving his sentence.

Law students in court showdown

Law students argued a hypothetical case in front of some of Bermuda's top legal brains during an event held in memory of late Puisne Judge Hector Barcilon. Kimberley Caines, Kai Musson and Geoffrey Faiella won the 11th Hector Barcilon Memorial Moot, which was judged by Supreme Court Registrar Charlene Scott, Andrew Martin, a partner at Mello Jones and Martin, and Delroy Duncan, honorary secretary of the Bar Association.

The runners up in the event, held at Supreme Court on August 17, were Henry Tucker, Jamie Rego & John Hindess. Hector Barcilon, who was born in Egypt in 1908, was appointed to the post of Solicitor General in Bermuda in 1956. He became the first Bermuda Puisne Judge in 1965, and died in 1988.

Jewellery stolen

A large quantity of jewellery was stolen from a home in Frascati Lane, Smiths, on Wednesday.

According to the Police, the victim left his residence secured at 11 a.m., but when he returned at 1.30 p.m. he found it had been ransacked.

A second burglary on Wednesday affected a household in North Shore Road, Pembroke. The victims left their residence at 1.30 p.m., but discovered the burglary upon their return.

A Police spokesman reminded home owners to ensure their doors and windows are locked when they go out and before they go to bed, and put valuables in a safe or safety deposit box.
