Cops get new fingerprint machine
Suspected criminals will have their fingerprints taken electronically by the Police thanks to a new scanning system from the States. Bermuda Police Service has installed LIVESCAN devices at two stations, with a third due to be fitted with the equipment next spring.
Officers currently still use an ink pad, roller and paper to take fingerprints from suspects but the new method will be formally introduced in the next few weeks, once training is complete.
A spokesman said: "Once the fingerprints have been captured they are immediately electronically transmitted to the Bermuda Police Service's central fingerprint database, for comparison against possible outstanding crime scene marks.
"This new process will allow fingerprints to be compared and matched far easier and quicker than before, as well as confirming the identity of persons giving the fingerprint. In addition, it will save Police time in the actual taking of the fingerprints."
Attorney General Philip Perinchief approved the new system, which has been supplied by US company Crossmatch.
