An American visitor who pleaded guilty to importation of cocaine said the experience made her realise she needed to make some life changes.
Jamay Kathryn Schultz, of New York City, arrived in Bermuda on October 3, the day before her 21st birthday. She was stopped by narcotics officers on her arrival at the Bermuda International Airport.
Officers searched her luggage and found a rolled-up US dollar bill and three empty Ziploc bags. Both the bill and the bags had a white powder residue on them which was later shown to be cocaine.
When asked if she was carrying controlled drugs, Schultz took a fourth Ziploc bag containing cocaine from her pocket and gave it to officers.
She said she had planned to use the dollar bill to smoke the 0.13 grams of cocaine, which she had purchased in New York for personal use. ?This really made me realise I need to make some life changes,? Schultz told Magistrate Edward King. ?Some people, I need to stop hanging around.?
When she said it was only the second or third time she had tried cocaine, Mr. King replied: ?That?s two times too much. Are you going to stop??
?Yes,? Schultz replied. Mr. King fined her $1,000 for the charge of importation and a further $500 for the charge of possession of the dollar bill intended for smoking drugs.
The maximum sentence in both cases is a fine of $10,000, five years imprisonment, or both.
