Bermudian cruise worker sails home

The mega-cruise ship that arrived in Dockyard this week had a sea-worthy Bermudian amongst its staff.

Former Devonshire Academy student David Byrd is in charge of the stage show and creative lighting throughout the vessel.

When the Royal Caribbean-operated cruise ship arrived this week it was the first time in more than two years that Mr. Byrd has been able to get back to Bermuda.

His love of travel has taken him around the Caribbean and to Hawaii during his three years with the cruise company. He joined the 3,100-passenger capacity last October and will now be making fortnightly visits to Bermuda during the coming cruise ship season.

He was originally hired by the cruise company as a lighting technician but has quickly been promoted to the position of lighting and aspects manager, something that fits into his ultimate desire to become involved in the movie industry as a lighting producer.

He studied technical aspects of theatre work as a student and his current position puts him in charge of the lighting effects for the entertainment events on the cruise ship.

Mr. Byrd, 28, said: ?Royal Caribbean is the best in the industry as far technology and the opportunities they offer.

?I?m responsible for the ice show onboard and the lighting for the show and the lighting for the two parades we have down the Royal Promenade on the ship.

?I?m also responsible for all the moving and ?intelligent? lighting onboard.?

He added: ?It is fun to travel and see other cultures, meet people and to be doing the job that I love.?
