Entrepreneurs are being urged to sign up for new industrial space planned for Southside.

Bermuda Land Development Company (BLDC) is hoping to open the first section of a new commercial park early next year.

BLDC Board Chairman Calvin White said: "We are looking for retail, light industry, maybe warehousing."

The development, which has yet to get official approval, is the latest in the planned expansion of Southside into a viable industrial and residential area.

Mr. White declined to put a figure on the as-yet-unnamed commercial park which he hopes will be completed within five years on the site of where the go-carts used to race in front of the large hanger in front of the St. David's base.

Mr. White said: "We are looking at creating a critical mass.

"Research has shown there is plenty of demand for industrial space. We have a number of people looking for it, that's why we have decided to build it."

The 4,000 square foot units can be subdivided into three units and Mr. White said first options were being given to current clients in Marginal Wharf on the St. David's Harbour.

He said businesses could cash in on untapped markets.

"We don't have a barber shop, maybe another restaurant? We have the Police planning to move in a year or so right across the road so we need ancillary businesses."

The opening of the new Ferguson Park home for seniors was further evidence the area was taking off said Mr. White.

"We are looking for entrepreneurs, maybe some people are finding Hamilton too pricey and they don't need to be there."

"We are excited about things happening and we are inviting the public to come and see us."

He said the Channel House office in Longfield Road, completed a year ago, is already full while 4,000 square foot Triton House was still available for hire.
