BPSU?sBall to meet with Ahad

Abdullah Ahad worked at the Bermuda College as a communications lecturer for three years before moving on to the Education Ministry a year ago. He first came to public light when he complained that three College lecturers had made racially insensitive remarks and the College activated disciplinary procedures which ended in the dismissal of College lecturer Sean O?Connell.

The Bermuda Public Services Union is now in the curious position of representing Mr. Ahad in his grievances against Government, while still seeking justice for Dr. O?Connell who the union claims has not been given due process.

?He is a member and I will be meeting with Mr. Ahad. That?s all I can say at the present time. I don?t know anything besides what the general public knows,? said BPSU Secretary General Ed Ball.

He confirmed that the O?Connell issue was still ongoing for the union, although the College board may consider the matter closed and stressed that the two cases were entirely separate matters. ?From the union?s perspective we are weighing all the facts (of the O?Connell case),? Mr. Ball said.

?The College feel that they have sufficient evidence to warrant dismissal. The union?s position is everyone has the right to see or know the evidence. We have a legal opinion and we have to get further legal opinion before we embark on this matter. And then it would be up to the union hierarchy to make a decision.?

An American married to a Bermudian, Mr. Ahad was not on a work permit as previously reported in the Press.
