Charlie Swan has won the Southampton West Central by-election, retaining the seat for the United Bermuda Party with a 115 majority. Mr. Swan’s percentage of the vote, at 55.9 percent, was virtually the same as former constituency MP Jon Brunson, who caused the by-election after stepping down earlier this year having won with a majority of 142 and 57.3 percent of the vote - collecting a total of 548 votes - in the December 2007 election.
The Progressive Labour Party’s Marc Bean came second, as he had in 2007, with 312 votes representing 40.8 percent of the electorate. A year ago Mr. Bean’s share of the vote had been 42.5 percent.
Independent candidate Raymond Davis had 24 votes, representing 3.1 percent of the total 763 votes cast.
