Breaking News: Govt. looking into cause of dead fish

Environment Minister Glenn Blakeney has urged the public to ignore e-mails in circulation which warn people not to eat local fish.

At a press conference this afternoon Mr. Blakeney said: “If you are getting fish from reliable sources such as restaurants, hotels and commercial fishermen, you should not be concerned.

“If however, you are a leisure fisherman or are fishing off the rocks, you shouldn’t take any fish which are lethargic or floating.”

Hundreds of fish have washed up on Bermuda's shores in recent weeks.

Government is currently investigating the cause of the recent die-off, in partnership with scientists from the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences (BIOS).

Fish die-offs generally occur every couple of years in Bermuda — some on a larger scale than others. Causes of the latest die-off could be attributed to algal blooms or the recent large coral spawn.
