Breaking News: Inflation falls below two percent

The rate of inflation fell to below two percent in April as lower energy prices kicked in, according to statistics released this afternoon.

According to a report from Government’s statistics department, the rate of inflation was 1.9 percent — compared to 2.7 percent in March.

The Food sector has been the largest contributor to inflation — on average, the cost of food items increased 6.5 percent year-over-year although the level is down from the 7.5 percent in March.

The rent, and education, recreation and reading sectors also had a strong influence on the annual rate of inflation, as price shifts in these sectors were 2.3 percent and 6.5 percent, respectively.
