Breaking News: Selassie sentenced to 35 years in landmark ruling

The killer of pregnant schoolgirl Rhiana Moore was today ordered to spend at least 35 years in jail before he can be considered for release.

The ruling by Chief Justice Richard Ground in the case of Ze Selassie marked a legal landmark in Bermuda, as it swept away the previous mandatory minimum of 25 years for premeditated murder.

Rhiana was just 14 years old when Selassie — who had been conducting an illegal sexual relationship with her —– stabbed her to death to cover up the fact that she was pregnant with his child.

He was convicted of the killing by a jury last month, with his sentencing adjourned until yesterday.

For the full story, and reaction from Rhiana’s family, see tomorrow’s edition of The Royal Gazette.
