Breaking News Update: PLP tributes to Nelson Bascome
Health Minister Nelson Bascome died this morning while on a trip in the US.
The PLP stalwart, who has been part of politics since he was 11-years-old, has represented Pembroke East in the House of Assembly since 1989. He was responsible for the Ministry of Health and Family Services from November 1998 to July 2003 and again from October 2006 to February 2007, he returned again as Health Minister in December 2007.
At a press conference this morning Premier Ewart Brown called for a minute of silence in honour of Mr. Bascome, who was aged 53. The Premier also spoke of his long service: “Obviously the news of Minister Bascomes sudden passing has hit us all like a thunderbolt... When you have a close Minister fall it reminds us what is really important.”
Progressive Labour Party Chairman David Burt said: “It is rare in politics you find someone with no enemies, Nelson Bascome was one of those people.”
The PLP also issued a statement which said: “It is with great sadness that we announce the death this morning of our esteemed colleague the Hon. Nelson Bascome. To many of us he was more than a parliamentarian, Government Minister, or community activist, he was a trusted friend.
“Minister Bascome has represented the Pembroke community in the House of Assembly since 1989. The objectives of his Party were consistent with the aspirations of his constituents. He served both with distinction.
“Notwithstanding the demands of his portfolio as Minister of Health at the request of the Premier he had recently agreed to accept the additional responsibility for the Education Ministry. He was a fearless advocate striving to improve the community, particularly in the St. Monica's and Parson's Road areas. We will sorely miss the skill and competence he possessed and the genuine caring concern he shared.
“We extend heartfelt condolences to his wife and family on their grievous loss, and pray that they may be comforted by the Holy Spirit as they face the future.”
In recognition of Mr. Bascome’s death, flags on all Government buildings are being flown at half staff today, tomorrow and on the day of the Minister's funeral.
