Broadcaster aims to hunt down Fox
Probably Bermuda's smallest and most densely populated constituency, Pembroke South East is solid Progressive Labour Party territory.
Broadcaster Ashfield DeVent will be a racing cert to take Constituency 21, the crime hit district which includes the back of town area to Victoria and Reid Street.
Mr. DeVent said the open drug dealing that takes place in many parts of the constituency, lack of affordable housing, the pressures of people living on top of one another, and litter have been key issues on the doorstep.
He favours Police picking up street dealers rather than concentrating so much on catching the `Mr. Big's' because of the nuisance effect on residents and businesses, and the poor example they set for youths. He said constituents criticise Police and the Corporation of Hamilton for allowing open drug dealing in Middletown, Court Street and parts of Curving Avenue while cracking down on crime such as begging just a few streets away in the centre of Hamilton.
"There is a basic problem of crime because in some areas there is the open sale of drugs where anyone can sit out on their porch and watch it happening," he said.
"I take some issue with the school of thought that says there's no sense going after the little guy on the street. They should not be allowed to carry on their trade so easily and openly.
"The small guy on the street might become the next Mr. Big if you have open lawlessness on the street and they should be targeted. There is a problem with space, with people living so closely together and there are generational problems with younger people playing music that aggravates older people.
"People are concerned about education. They are happy to see smaller class sizes thanks to the PLP but there are a number of young men who are not as literate as society would hope."And there is a lack of affordable housing, particularly studios and one bedroom apartments for single men and women. It is a PLP stronghold, but the election will be won on the doorstep because it is so small and people like the personal touch. "I've had a positive response, nothing really negative. There has been some criticism, but that is a human trait where people want more done in a short period of time."
UBP candidate, Lawrence (Rocky) Fox, could not be contacted yesterday for comment.
