Budget Highlights

Total Government revenue for 2006/07 is estimated at $856 million ? $21 million more than the original projection.

Current programme expenditure for 2006/07 is $822 million ? $16 million, or two percent, above the original estimate.

The Ministry of Finance estimates that the 2006 current account surplus was in the range of $825 - $850 million for 2006.

Estimated net public debt outstanding at March 31, 2007: $206 million.

Capital expenditure borrowing: $56 million ($29 million less than originally forecast).

Payroll tax receipts for 2006/07: $270 million.

Customs duty receipts for 2006/07: $235 million.

Overall number of jobs in 2006: 39,611 ? an increase of 664 jobs (two percent) across the economy.

Jobs held by Bermudians in 2006: 27,316 (seven out of ten jobs).

International business jobs: 4,469 (up three percent).

Business services sector jobs: 4,090 (220 jobs added in 2006).

Construction sector jobs: 3,646 (up five percent).

Retail sector jobs: More than 3,200 jobs (a fall of one percent).

Hotels posted a decrease in jobs of seven percent while restaurants, cafes and bars saw an increase of two per cent.

Visitor arrivals rose by 23 per cent in 2006.
