Butterfield banks on these high achievers
Butterfield Bank announced the winners of its scholarships, education bursaries and awards for 2006 at a special Scholarship Reception at the Bank?s head office on Monday.
In an effort to assist Bermuda?s youth to attain to their educational goals, Butterfield Bank presents yearly scholarships, bursaries and awards to students who demonstrate outstanding academic achievements.
Tiffany Allwood is the 2006 recipient of the Butterfield Bank Scholarship in memory of Sir Harry D. Butterfield. Ms Allwood is pursing a Master of Science in Chemistry at Imperial College, London, UK, in order to study Medicine or Medical Research.
The Sir Harry D. Butterfield Scholarship is valued at $20,000 per year for up to four years. Ms Allwood said: ?I feel very honoured and I?d just like to thank the bank, my selection committee and my family to whom I can attribute most of my success.?
Nicholas Charlton and D. Terre-Lynn Trott are this year?s recipients of the Butterfield Overseas Education Bursaries.
Mr. Charlton, who is studying at McMaster University in Ontario, Canada said he is excited that the Bank sponsored him so he can continue studying his passion ? child psychology. These bursaries are awarded annually to two students pursuing an undergraduate degree overseas and take into account financial need. They, too, are valued at $20,000 per year and are tenable for up to two years.
Rickai Binns is one of six $10,000 Educational Award winners. The awards are tenable for this year only and were also given to Aiesha Furbert-Oliver, Louise Grenfell, Carlita Lodge, Joshua Coreia and Karen Robinson.
Visual Arts Awards of $10,000 were given to two individuals ? Peter Lapsley and Melanie Edness-Eddy. Mr. Lapsley, currently curator at Bermuda Society of Arts, will join a very prestigious fine arts programme at Parsons New School of Design in New York while Ms Eddy is studying jewellery design at Central St. Martins College of Art and Design in London in the UK.
Alan Thompson, president and CEO of Butterfield Bank said he was extremely impressed with all of this year?s applicants.
?The vetting process is not an easy one, as a number of excellent candidates were once again presented to our committee,? he said.

The special reception on Monday was attended by several members of Butterfield Bank?s Board of Directors and senior executive team, along with scholarship, bursary and award recipients and their guests.
