Charity launched for murder victim

A supporter turned out on Wednesday night for a candlelight vigil in honour of Chena Trott and other victims of violence against women.

A registered charity was launched yesterday at the Cabinet building to provide financial assistance for the education and development of the children of murder victim, Chena Trott.

Ms Trott, 32, was killed at the Crawl Esso Tiger Market on August 9.

With members of her family, colleagues from the Recycling Plant, and members of the Bermuda Industrial Union, Works and Engineering Minister Alex Scott launched the Chena Daynette Trott Memorial Fund.

"The circumstances that bring us here are very sad and tragic," said Mr. Scott. "Chena Trott's untimely passing has shocked the entire community and left her children without a mother, a breadwinner, and a friend," he said.

Mr. Scott said that the fund was established as her family and friends wanted to find a way to support Shadae, 14, Candice, 13, and Akiri, ten.

Accounts at the Bank of Butterfield and the Bank of Bermuda have been set up for donations. As a registered charity, the fund will be subject to all the regulations required by the Registrar General and the funds will be audited annually.

"Chena's children deserve the same opportunities in life that all Bermuda children have. The loss of their mother will be with them throughout their lives - they can never replace her," Mr. Scott said.
