Committee to decide Robinson?s fate

The Committee on the Prerogative of Mercy must convene for the first time in more than 20 years to decide the fate of criminally insane Lorenzo Prince Robinson.

The Committee will recommend to the Governor whether Robinson, currently remanded in custody in Westgate, should be detained in a secure mental hospital and will help to locate a facility.

According to evidence during Robinson's trial, neither St. Brendan's Hospital nor Westgate have an adequate secure facility, meaning Robinson may be sent abroad.

According to the Constitution, the Advisory Committee on the Prerogative of Mercy shall consist of:

Five members who shall be appointed by the Governor (Sir John Vereker) after consultation with the Premier (Alex Scott) and;

The Attorney General (Larry Mussenden)

It also reads that this committee shall not be summoned except by the authority of the Governor, acting in his discretion; and the Governor shall preside at all meetings of the Committee.
