Controversial teacher may return to classroom today

News that a teacher accused of hitting a young girl at a school will be returning to work today has sparked threats of a total boycott.

The Royal Gazette understands Laura Delgaty, who has served a three-day suspension following the alleged incident at the Dame Marjorie Bean Hope Academy in Old Military Road, Devonshire will return to work today.

Ms Delgaty served the suspension following the incident several months ago and then went on maternity leave.

She had been due back on Monday but parents threatened to remove their children from her class and she stayed away while talks continued on her role.

However, one parent rang The Royal Gazette yesterday to say: ?We have talked to the Education Department but they are not listening to us. She returns tomorrow. My child is not going to that school.?

Ifor Hughes, president of the school?s Parent Teachers Association, refused to comment in detail on the issue last night, but said talks would continue with the Ministry of Education in a bid to resolve concerns at the school. ?While these concerns have not yet been resolved, we still remain hopeful that they can be,? he said.
