Convicted killer appears in court

MONDAY, NOVEMBER 8: Convicted child killer Chesterfield Johnson appeared in Magistrates’ Court today.

Johnson served 20 years in prison for the 1978 rape and murder of 11-year-old Paget Primary student, Connie Furtado.

The 59-year-old was fined this morning for punching and kicking at officers trying to arrest him at the corner of Court and Elliott Streets on Saturday.

Johnson, of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to obstructing Police and violently resisting arrest.

The court heard that Police stopped and attempted to search Johnson, but he ran from the officers. They caught up with him but he struggled, kicking and hitting the officers until they detained him with Captor spray.

Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner fined Johnson $1,500 for violently resisting arrest.

He ordered that the full amount be paid before the end of the day or Johnson would face 150 days in prison.

He also sentenced Johnson to three months’ imprisonment, suspended 18 months, for obstructing Police.
