Cougars, Trojans meet yet again
MOST of the Premier and First Division clubs have already begun their summer break. For others there is still plenty left to play for with three trophies yet to be decided. Two of the titles will be determined on Sunday when the Friendship and Shield finals take place at the National Sports Centre. Two of the four teams in action this weekend will also be aiming to land the season-ending FA Cup in three weeks time.
First Division champions Devonshire Colts will aim to complete the promotion and Shield double when they take on Southampton Rangers in the 2.00 Shield final on Sunday. Like Somerset Trojans, who meet Devonshire Cougars, yet again, in their Friendship final at 4.00, Colts will be missing a key member of their successful team. Coach Ray Jones flies out today as coach of Bermuda’s Under-14 national team that is participating in the Dallas Cup in Texas next week.
Bermuda are sending three youth teams and Somerset coach Dennis Brown will also be on the trip as coach of the Under-13s. But while the Bermuda contingent’s return on April 9 will allow Jones to rejoin Colts in time for his team’s FA Cup semi-final against St. George’s on April 15, Brown will also miss Somerset’s FA Cup semi-final against Boulevard next Sunday.
In his absence, the Trojans are in a position to finish the season with three trophies overall and thus be the most successful team in local football this season despite their second-half stutter in the league. However, Devonshire Cougars will want to have something to say about that as they, too, eye a third trophy. The league and Martonmere Cup winners were recently knocked out of the FA Cup by the Trojans in a replay after the first match in Somerset finished in an exciting 3-3 draw. They also lost to Somerset in the final of the Dudley Eve in January, thus being deprived of possibly two more trophies by the west enders. That should make them all the more determined on Sunday, though the Trojans will also have plenty to inspire them, not least the opportunity to land a ninth Friendship title — and the first since 1989.
Cougars and Trojans have met a number of times this season and the true surface and open space at the National Sports Centre should lend itself to some exciting football. Captain Kwame Steede is a key man for Cougars and his surging runs from midfield create scoring opportunities. Timmy Figureido in the Somerset goal will be hoping for an easier time than what Canada’s national team gave him last weekend on the same pitch when they bombarded his goal virtually non-stop in the friendly against Bermuda.
While Cougars pipped North Village for the league title, Somerset failed to make a serious challenge for the title after sitting in second place (behind Boulevard) at the halfway stage of the season. Both teams faded but as fate would have it, Trojans and Blazers will meet next weekend in the semi-final of the FA Cup.
Somerset eventually had to settle for a fifth-place finish in the league after closing out their league season on Tuesday night with a 3-0 loss to Dandy Town, though the Trojans did rest some of their first team regulars ahead of Sunday’s more important final.
Devonshire Colts have the opportunity to win the most trophies by a team in the lower division. The double is well within their reach though they will have to be wary of Southampton Rangers who fell short in the promotion race and will be looking to salvage something from the season.
Colts were also favoured over Wolves in the First Division’s Dudley Eve final but were eventually beaten on penalty kicks. After this weekend Colts were be aiming for a 13th appearance in an FA final when they meet St. George’s in an all-First Division semi-final.
Before the Shield and Friendship finals at the NSC on Sunday, KW Rangers will take on Robin Hood at 12.00 in the Commercial KO Cup final.
