Cycle rider succumbs to head injuries

Police named 24-year-old Akil Williams as the eighth person to lose their life on Bermuda?s roads this year.

Mr. Williams sustained serious head injuries around 8.10 a.m. on Saturday in an motorcycle crash on Parsons Lane, Pembroke. A Police spokesman said it appeared that Mr. Williams was travelling east when he lost control of the bike while attempting to negotiate a left hand bend. He ended up off the road in some nearby bushes.

Mr. Williams, who is believed to be from St. John?s Road, Pembroke, was found unconscious by a member of the public and rushed to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead by a doctor at 2.50 p.m. yesterday.

The incident occurred on the same isolated stretch of road where 18-year-old RyanBurgess died on February 10th when his bike smashed into a tree.

Officers maintained a guard at the scene up until yesterday. During this time, said the spokesman, a further motorist crashed in the same area, bringing the total number of collisions on the lane in the past five years to 77.

?It is a narrow stretch of road which is due to be assessed in the near future in an attempt to improve the road characteristics. The matter will be brought up before the Road Safety Council and the Ministry of Works and Engineering,? said the spokesman.

?It appears that many vehicles travel at high speeds through Parsons Lane, despite the road not being conducive to travelling at such speeds.

?In fact, around 4 a.m. Monday morning, a car travelling west collided with a tree in the same area while Police were guarding the scene. The driver, a 29-year-old Devonshire woman, was arrested on suspicion of impaired driving and detained at Hamilton Police station after she failed the alco-analyser test.

?The car received extensive rear end damage, however the driver and her passenger were not injured.?
