Dame Jennifer takes over as College board chairman
It?s all change at Bermuda College with two top appointments being announced on the same day including former Premier Dame Jennifer Smith taking over as Chairman of the Board, replacing ousted Nalton Brangman, an early casualty of new Education Minister Neletha Butterfield?s college shake-up.
Ms Butterfield paid tribute to the service of Mr. Brangman and noted he had also now presented a report on questions raised by the Public Accounts Committee regarding alleged perks received by college president Dr. Charles Green.
And as Dame Jennifer, currently House of Assembly deputy speaker, assumed her new position it was also announced that Dr. Green?s successor next year will be Dr. Duranda Greene.
Dame Jennifer replaces Mr. Brangman at a time when the college faces a number of challenges, including the questions from the Public Accounts Committee, and is looking at ways to implement plans that were drawn up last year to take the college forward.
Education Minister Ms Butterfield confirmed the former chairman had presented his report on questions raised by PAC.
She said: ?He has served us well. Let there be no doubt about that. Mr. Brangman?s record speaks for itself. I have met with him and personally thanked him for serving the Ministry.
?Proper governance of our educational institutions, indeed all publicly funded institutions, is of critical importance. I certainly expect that Dame Jennifer, a fiercely passionate advocate of public education, will ensure that concerns of the Public Accounts Committee continue to be addressed expeditiously.?
Ms Butterfield added: ?Changes in ministerial portfolio represent an opportunity to usher in fresh new thinking about how we go about achieving our mission to protect and enhance the public good.?
Accepting the post, Dame Jennifer said: ?It is a challenge I look forward to meeting. I know there are a number of issues outstanding at Bermuda College that will have to be dealt with. I look forward to meeting the other members of the board and to getting to grips with those things that demand attention and to be a link between the Minister and the College and ensuring that all aspects of education work together for the benefit of the children of Bermuda.
?I know that last year, the Bermuda College carried out a strategic initiative and they have plans coming out of that initiative in addition to the questions coming out of the Public Accounts Committee. There are also some outstanding questions regarding technical education.?
Later in the day it was revealed Dr. Duranda Greene has been selected as college president-elect to take over when current president Dr. Green?s three-year term of office ends next summer.
Deputy Chairman of the Board Pandora Wright made the announcement, mentioning Dr. Greene?s ?passion for education?.
Dr. Greene will be the first female and the youngest president to head the college. She is also a graduate of the college and is currently the college?s Assistant to the President for Special Projects.
