DAO seeks radar at Prospect

The Department of Airport Operations was given Planning permission to build a Doppler Weather Radar Project station ? like the one recently installed near Cooper's Island in St. David's ? on top of a listed building, Fort Prospect in Devonshire.

The Development Applications Board (DAB) said a building permit would be required before a 30 foot tall pole that records weather information and conveys it to the Bermuda Weather Service in Southside could be erected.

It will be used in conjunction with Government's new Doppler Weather Radar Project, being spearheaded by the Ministry of Transport and Tourism.

Director of the Bermuda Weather Service Roger Williams said in July the new station at No. 14 Headquarters Hill, will be one of six automatic antennas placed around the Island, some of which will be located at off-shore platforms.

"Eventually the public will be able to access the information on the Internet," Mr. Williams said. "This will be useful in times of extreme weather but also for day-to-day use for things like boating and fishing."

Fort Prospect is the largest fort in the Prospect area but has been somewhat degraded for use as a water catchment and water works, the listed building guide said.
