Dead body identified as missing person
The body found one week ago in Walsingham Nature Reserve has been revealed to be that of a man who went missing in August, Bermuda Police said yesterday. The next of kin of Walter Hannibal Smith, 74, of Devonshire have been notified and Mr. Smith's remains were released to the family. Mr. Smith was last seen alive at 2 p.m. on Sunday, August 26, 2001.
At the time, Mr. Smith was carrying a black knapsack and wearing black pants, a light blue shirt, blue track shoes and a blue `Bermuda' windbreaker.
A family member reported Mr. Smith missing to Police shortly after.
While Police spokesman Dwayne Caines said yesterday the cause of death is not yet known, foul play has been ruled out. "On the basis on forensic evidence obtained from the examinations of the scene and the remains of the body, we can declare there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the cause of death," Mr. Caines said.
Bermuda Police enlisted the help of overseas forensic anthropologist Erin Kimmerle who worked with Government Pathologist Dr. John Obafunwa and Police Serious Crimes Unit officers. The remains were found last Saturday by a member of the public.
