Debaters take aim at traffic woes
Bermuda?s Middle School students will be debating issues surrounding Bermuda?s traffic congestion nightmare on Saturday at the 15th Annual School Debate Tournament.
Hosted by the Bermuda Junior Service League, the tournament will involve more than 100 students from ten Middle Schools and six Senior Schools. CedarBridge Academy are the defending champions, holding the Victoria Cox Memorial Trophy.
While the Middle School students debate the resolution ?Tolls are the answer to Bermuda?s traffic congestion?, high school students will debate whether or not ?Professionalism has ruined the Olympic Games?. Teams will also be given some impromptu motions taken from Bermuda?s headlines, for which they will have to think on their feet.
The teams will be judged by more than 50 trained and experienced judges, many of whom are accomplished debaters themselves. ?Debate has become an important part of the students? education,? BJSL debate chairperson Lorraine Hirschberg said. ?We continue to be pleased and surprised with the participation of students and judges.?
The tournament, which is free and open to the public, will take place on Saturday at the Bermuda College Stonington campus. The first round will begin at 10 a.m. and the final will be held at 4 p.m.
