Deputy DA 'confident' Brown case will go to trial in US
ATTORNEYS charged with prosecuting alleged rapist Kevin Brown are confident they have enough evidence to ensure that the physician and eldest son of Premier Ewart Brown will stand trial.
And they argue that California-based Brown is a sexual predator who poses a threat to women and needs to be put behind bars.
Speaking to the Mid-Ocean News during a preliminary hearing into allegations of sexual assault against Brown, Los Angeles Deputy District Attorney Ann Marie Wise this week said: "We are very confident that this case will go to trial."
When asked if she believed Brown posed a threat to women, Ms Wise replied: "That is a position that we have taken. Yes, we do believe he is a danger."
Brown, 37, was originally arrested in June 2008 following a year-long sting operation by the Los Angeles Police Department's Vice Squad. That operation was launched after a patient who attended Brown's clinic claimed she was molested by the physician. He was apprehended shortly after an undercover cop posing as a patient also claimed that she was sexually assaulted during a routine examination at Brown's clinic.
Following Brown's initial arrest, detectives obtained evidence from a further 23 women who claimed they were the victims of sexual assault by Brown. The doctor now faces 33 felony counts involving 12 alleged victims over five years. Last year he pleaded not guilty to all the charges, including acts against the undercover police officer and a 15 year old. He could be jailed for life if convicted.
So far, six of Brown's alleged victims have given evidence during this week's preliminary hearing – held to determine if there is enough evidence to warrant a full-scale trial.
On Tuesday, police officer Stacy Young testified that, as part of last year's police sting operation, she made an appointment to see Brown with a fake injury to her ankle. She told the court that, after an initial examination, the doctor lifted up her shirt and bra and began fondling her breasts.
Officer Young, who was wearing a police wire tap at the time of the appointment, told the court: "It was so quick. As soon as I saw his hand on my breast, I pushed it away. I said, 'What are you doing?' He backed up and said, 'Oh, I'm sorry.' He explained he wanted to check something under my breast."
Several other alleged victims, including one 20 year old and a mother of four, have given similar testimony at the hearing, alleging that, during routine examinations, Brown had "a look of lusting" and fondled their breasts.
The remaining six alleged victims are all expected to be called by the prosecution during the hearing, which is being held before Los Angeles Superior Court Judge William Hollingsworth, Jr. Proceedings are scheduled to last until next Tuesday.
