This year's End-to-End event is set to raise a record sum, spokeswoman Terri Durrant predicted.

She said $137,000 had already been raised and she believes when all the pledges come in the figure could top last year's total of $141,000.

This year's cross-Island hike attracted 894 walkers, including 286 who did the whole 21 miles.

She said the number of cyclists had doubled to 181, with 135 going the whole distance.

The Itsy Bitsy walk attracted around 100 children while ten kayakers paddled the end to end.

Ms Durrant said: "It was rough out there, they didn't have an easy time. It took longer than some of the expected. It took between three and five hours but they all made it."

She said one walker had to be taken to hospital suffering from dehydration, but was OK now.

She said: "It was hot out there but as soon as we got to Dockyard it was freezing."

The charities will will get the money are Open Airways, YouthNet, Bermuda Autism Support Group, Education Society and Project Action. Cheques will be presented to the charities at a City Hall ceremony at the end of the month.

Any person with outstanding pledges can deliver them to the main office of BTC in Victoria Street.
