Environment Ministry grants permission for animal show

The Ministry of Environment has granted DNA Entertainment permission to bring tigers and bears to Bermuda for shows next weekend despite several national and international groups speaking out against the animal show.

It emerged last night that approval, in principle, was granted yesterday. The approval is subject to receipt of all health clearances from the US. Environment Minister Neletha Butterfield said she took into consideration concerns voiced by animal welfare groups and individuals when she made her decision about granting permission for the ?Animal Extravaganza? shows.

?These submissions contained generalisations regarding animal cruelty, but lacked any evidence of violations by the exhibitors,? she said. ?The exhibitors are licensed by the US Department of Agriculture and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, and our due diligence has revealed numerous inspection reports that showed no evidence of violations.?

The application, made by DNA Entertainment, was evaluated based on criteria under the Care and Protection of Animals Act 1975. The Ministry also assessed the application with respect to background checks on exhibitors, details of transportation and housing arrangements. The Ministry ensured that the animals would be accompanied by persons familiar with their needs and behaviour. In addition the Ministry made sure that all Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora requirements were met by the group.

The event will take place May 26-28, an additional show has been added on May 28 to accommodate the number of people who have requested tickets. For ticket information visit www.dnashows.com.
