Festival helps boost hotel occupancy rates
The majority of larger hotels in Bermuda appear to be benefiting from the additional visitors to the Island for the Bermuda Music Festival.
For the Fairmont Southampton Hotel this translates into the majority of entertainers and their entourages staying at the South Shore property ? one of the three major sponsors of the music extravaganza. The Fairmont Hamilton Princess and Bank of Bermuda are the other two.
Fairmont Southampton general manager Norman Mastalir said yesterday that the music festival always created a certain amount of activity and 'buzz' at the hotel and described the occupancy rate for the duration of the festival as "very good".
Another hotel which is benefiting from the festival is The Reefs, which boasts a 100 percent occupancy rate for the weekend.
A hotel spokeswoman said while some of the hotel's guests had come to Bermuda especially for the festival, guests who are currently on vacation also showed interest.
Many of The Reefs guests are "repeaters" ? guests who always stay at the hotel when they visit Bermuda.
Elbow Beach communications manager Erica Martin said the hotel was 90 percent full for the weekend.
She added that many of the guests were part of larger groups and not necessarily festival goers.
She said it would be very hard to tell if any of their guests had come to Bermuda just for the festival, but added that while the occupancy rate was slightly down during the week, it had picked up for the weekend.
"We're not a sponsor so we don't have a special package or anything," she said, adding that their concierge had all the necessary information for guests who wished to attend.
The festival wasn't having an effect at Cambridge Beaches, but some guests who were currently staying at the property did show interest in attending the festival.
