Festival stagehand caught with cannabis

Four men appeared in Magistrates' Court yesterday for various drug-related charges including a transient worker from Pennsylvania who imported 6.57 grams of cannabis on September 26.

James Edward Dunne, 40, pleaded guilty to the charge of importing cannabis.

Dunne was hired to help construct a stage for the Bermuda Music Festival which starts today.

Crown counsel Wayne Caines told the court that Dunne arrived on a commercial flight and handed a clear sandwich bag to Police.

The Government analyst found the bag to contain 6.57 grams of cannabis and Dunne was arrested.

"Please accept the fact that I'm not a drug user, I just don't fly easy and I never smoked it. Someone had given it to me to help with the flight," Dunne told the court.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo fined Dunne $1,500, or two months default, and gave him until Friday to pay.

In another matter, Keilo Govia, 22, an electrician from Deepdale Road, Pembroke, pleaded guilty to being in possession of 20.53 grams of cannabis.

Mr. Caines told the court that Govia was arrested on May 16 in Sandys when he and another person were spotted on the Railway Trail on their motorcycles.

He said when Govia was searched, Police found the cannabis and he was arrested, adding that Govia had previous convictions for similar offences.

Govia was fined $1,000 to be paid by Friday.

Colin Louis Ingham, 31, of My Lord's Bay Lane, Hamilton Parish, pleaded guilty to being in possession of 7.28 grams of cannabis.

Mr. Caines told the court that Police, acting on information, went to see Ingham at his house, but when they arrived Ingham handed them the cannabis he had in his pocket and told them he did not have anything else.

He was fined $1,000.

Weldon Kyle Robinson, 26, pleaded not guilty to three separate charges of being in possession of cocaine, cannabis and cannabis resin with intent to supply.

Mr. Caines told the court that the suggested street value of all the drugs found in Robinson's possession was $700.

Robinson was arrested on May 3 in Pembroke and resides at Henry Hill's Road, Smith's.

He was represented by Charles Richardson, who was not available yesterday and the matter was adjourned for trial on December 28.

He was released on $1,000 bail.
