Fifty percent in poll back Swan comeback

A majority of respondents to The Royal Gazette's on-line poll say they'd like to see Sir John back in politics

Fifty percent of voters in a Royal Gazette online poll feel former Premier Sir John Swan should make a political comeback.

But 43.8 percent of the 317 votes cast said he should not. Six percent of those asked: "Should Sir John Swan make a political comeback?" said they did not know.

The unscientific poll ran on The Royal Gazette's website, www.theroyalgazette.com. Community activist W.A. (Toppy) Cowen has been leading a campaign to have Sir John, Premier from 1982 until 1985, get back into politics, saying he is the only person who can lead the Opposition United Bermuda Party back to power. Sir John led the UBP to four General Election victories but resigned in 1995 after voters rejected Independence in a referendum.
