Film on Cahows earns two merit awards at Wildlife Film Festival

A movie about the rediscovery of the Cahow and the conservation story surrounding Nonsuch Island has narrowly missed out taking top honours at one of the largest wildlife film festivals in the world after being beaten to the accolades by two box-office hit movies about penguins and parrots.

But the documentary ?Bermuda?s Treasure Island? is proving such a hit with viewers in Bermuda that $20 DVD copies of the movie are selling out almost as quickly as it can be re-stocked in shops.

The film premiered on Island earlier in the year and has been entered in the 29th International Wildlife Film Festival, which is being held next month in Montana.

Although the festival does not take place until the middle of May the judges? winners are already known.

Andrew Dobson, president of the Bermuda Audubon Society which joined in partnership with Castletown Productions to make the film, said: ?The judging is complete and I am thrilled to report the film has been chosen as a finalist in several categories. It received two Merit Awards for ?strong main character? and ?positive message?.

?Not surprisingly ?March of the Penguins? and ?Parrots of Telegraph Hill? ? two magnificent films which were box office hits in theatres world-wide ? took many top honours.?

The Best of Festival award was won by David Attenborough?s new series ?Life in the Undergrowth?.

?It is therefore immensely satisfying that amongst such illustrious company our own film received recognition,? said Mr. Dobson.

He added: ?There has been a great demand for the DVD. As quickly as we supply more copies they are gone. We are making more copies of the DVD available this week.?

The film can be bought from the Farmers? Market, Body Shop and Leisure Time shops in Hamilton, the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo gift shop, Bermuda Memories in St. George?s and Audio Visual Electronics in Somerset.

The Irish version of the documentary, which has the title ?Sceilligs and Bermuda? and compares Nonsuch Island and the Cahow with a small group of islands off south-west Ireland, received two honourable mentions from film festival judges and is to have a repeat broadcast on Irish TV this Easter Monday.

Bermuda?s Treasure Island is to be shown at the film festival in Missoula, Montana on May 18.
