Fire shuts down a Saturday night party

Firefighters tackle an electrical fire off Reid Street late on Saturday night.

Drinkers were evacuated from a Hamilton bar after an electrical fire sparked a ?brilliant light show?.

Firefighters were called to an alleyway off Reid Street on Saturday night after a passer-by spotted a shower of sparks flying from a cable hub.

A Hamilton crew quickly stamped out the blaze, which started in an electricity hub supplying power to the Captain?s Lounge and French Connection clothes store.

Lt. Dana Lovell. of Bermuda Fire Service, said high voltage cables connecting the businesses shorted before igniting trash left out for disposal.

?A passer-by saw a shower of bright sparks that burned the leg of his pants and flew out at him,? Lt. Lovell said last night.

?When firefighters got there they were entertained by a brilliant light show.?

Belco officials were alerted after the fire was out. Power to the area affected was cut off while the problem was investigated, leading to the early closure of Captain?s Lounge.

One witness said the area was evacuated on safety grounds and reported seeing a lot of smoke. ?It flamed pretty high,? he added.

A crew of five firefighters were called to a fire escape area in the Washington Lane alleyway at about 11.40 p.m. to tackle the incident.
