?Fix my mother?s ceiling?

A Mary Victoria Road resident fears her 74-year-old mother could be injured because of a leaky bathroom ceiling ? and is furious that the Bermuda Housing Corporation (BHC) will not fix it.

Lucia Bacchetti?s mother Anna owns a home on Mary Victoria Road, Devonshire.

?It could be dangerous if its slippery,? Ms Bacchetti said yesterday. ?I am worried for my mother?s safety. What if she is home by herself, gets in the tub and slips? They would say she was clumsy, they would not say it was because of the ceiling.?

She said the gutters on her mother?s home were blown off during Hurricane Fabian.

It was without gutters for one year and it was only when BHC replaced them in June, that water started to seep into her bathroom, she said.

The problem has grown into an almost foot-wide hole in the ceiling, she said.

?If the leak gets any bigger the whole thing could come through,? Ms Bacchetti said.

She said the bathroom was refurbished two years ago at a cost of $20,000.

?I don?t know what is coming in from the roof,? she said. ?It could be oil from the roof. They have put me on hold for 27 days. I really want them to fix it.?

The last time she called a BHC employee told her it was Ms Bacchetti?s problem, she said.

She conceded that two weeks ago a BHC worker came to her home and looked at the hole, and two days later BHC said they would look into it but never did.

?I didn?t sleep all night,? she said. ?It is frustrating. I have a mom I need to take care of. I have been doing a lot of worrying.?

But BHC general manager Vance Campbell said that BHC would not pay for the bill.

?As far as our records indicate that property is a leasehold, and according to the lease she signed, she would be responsible for these repairs herself,? he said. ?The Corporation?s only responsibility for that property is to paint the exterior walls and roof once every three years, which was done last year.?
