Flood to fight name change plan

A past president of CedarBridge Academy, Dellwood Middle School, Paget Primary and Warwick Secondary PTSA is calling on taxpayers and parents to fight the Education Minister?s plans to re-name three middle schools. Minister Terry Lister recently announced plans to change the names of Dellwood, Spice Valley and Clearwater Middle Schools before Heritage Month next May. Minister Lister suggested changing the names to reflect local icons and in this way pay tribute to these men and women for future generations.

But Terrance Flood believes the Minister of ?throwing away? taxpayers? money.

Mr. Flood said he was speaking on behalf of the PTSAs of these schools in rejecting the idea and told Minister Lister to ?leave our schools alone?.

With some 30 years involvement in education in Bermuda, Mr. Flood said he felt these schools were proud of their current names ? which he said were picked out by students.

?I?m pretty sure that parents are happy with the way things are now and these schools have a lot of history, it?s not fair to the taxpayer,? he said.

Mr. Flood said he was tired of Ministers on both sides of the House making decisions concerning public schools when their children were in private schools.
