A couple of American Division One women football players got a taste of Bermuda football when they spent a quick mid-season break on the island with fellow player and Bermudian Cheyra Bell (seen above centre). Katie Fage (above left) and Caitlin Higgins (above right) play at the University at Buffalo with Bell who was given a football scholarship last year. And Higgins and Fage were both impressed by the turnout of fans to local games. “We don’t get anything like that when we play,” said Fage, a junior at the school. “We may get a few friends and some relatives.” Higgins, who is from Pennsylvania and Fage who is from New York State along with Bell have played in a number of games this season from California to Ohio and Vermont for their university side, the Buffaloes. Bell, 17, was the top scorer for her side Lady Cougars last season in Bermuda. She was offered the scholarship over a year ago after the Buffaloes coach Jean-A Tassy noticed her in Fort Lauderdale, Florida during the Orange Classic. Bell has also represented Bermuda’s national team and competed at the Island Games in Shetland. She wants to become a forensic pathologist — and play professionally.
