Former pastor to talk about books inspired by his stint here
The man who 50 years ago is credited with conceiving the idea and subsequent construction of the youth centre at Allen Temple AME Church in Somerset will be making a lightning return visit to Bermuda.
The Rev. Dr. Arthur S. Jones will be here until Monday to personally introduce two highly-acclaimed books that he says were inspired during his term in the island from 1957 to1961.
The books are titled The Birds, the Bees and the AMEs and 500 Golden Proverbs. Bermudians may feel they have a vested interest in the first book, because it was during his tenure here he first heard what he called the term "the birds and the bees".
He said his experiences in Bermuda influenced the book's title and much of it was written in Bermuda.
In reviewing the Birds, the Bees and the AMEs, this writer found it to be a brilliant, easy-to-read piece of humour-laden philosophy that will enlighten and embolden not only AMEs everywhere, but others, whether in the religious, political or social realm.
Dr. Jones has fictionalised in a good-natured manner his keen observations about everyday life and politics in the church. No one seems to have escaped his wit, whether they were the humblest AME in what elders once called the 'Amen Corner' to the mighty men and women regaled with bishop's frocks.
They all have their laughable idiosyncrasies endeavouring in their ascendancy to be at one and the same time diplomats and Christians as revealed in the book. Dr. Jones' other book, 500 Golden Proverbs, was also inspired in Bermuda, and is drawn from sermons and other wittings over the years.
During his tenure in Bermuda, Rev. Jones inspired many to come into the church. Notable among them is the Rev. Dr. Goodwin Douglas of Somerset, who in now a Presiding Elder of Churches in the Washington, DC, area, and who also is chairman of the powerful Episcopal Committee responsible for assigning bishops throughout the far-flung church.
After leaving Bermuda, Rev. Jones pastored in five states and has proved to be a prolific writer, authoring six books, six full-length religious plays and numerous booklets, pamphlets and short dramas.
During his visit this weekend, Dr. Jones will be hosted by his longstanding friend, Leroy Pyke of Hamilton Parish, Rev. Dr. Larry Lowe, pastor of Mt. Zion AME Church, and Rev. Guyton, pastor of St. Paul AME Church, Hamilton. He will be at St. Paul's Church on Sunday.
