Foundations give Island?s top students a cash boost

Dozens of Bermudian students were provided with much needed funding to aid their education by two separate organisations yesterday.

The Bank of Bermuda Foundation provided more than $500,000 to 20 students while the Bermuda alumni chapter of the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity gave $7,700 to seven deserving applicants.

Kappa Alpha Psi held a presentation at Victoria Park, Hamilton, yesterday with the Bank of Bermuda Foundation handing over its awards at City Hall.

The Bank of Bermuda Foundation helps local charities, offers scholarships and encourages and helps the development of Bermuda?s youth.

The students who received a total of $515,000 worth of scholarships were Katherine Davis, Laura Andrews, Jonathan McBeath, Claire Kelly, Clementine Stubbs, Kellyn White, Suzanne Kipps, Sharneil Paynter, Mystere Gibbons, Benjamin Hollis, Chakeya Ottley, Louise Grenfall, Ciara Talbot, Alaina Nelson, Joshua Correia, Jenny Palmer, Morgan Lightbourne, Kyle James, Husayn Brown and Dennis Symonds.

Bank of Bermuda Foundation director and secretary David Lang said: ?In today?s highly competitive environment it is vital that our young people are equipped with the best education in which to pursue their dreams. It is only by educating the youth of today that we can help develop the leaders of the future. We are very pleased to be able to assist these individual Bermudian students as they pursue higher levels of education and we wish them the very best in their future studies?.

The Kappa Alpha Psi awardees are Stefan Smith ? Andrews University, Jasmin Caines ? McGill University, Shirnae Bascome ? Florida Memorial University, Cetera DeSilva ? Brock University, Shantel DeShield? Temple University, Janay Trott? Howard University and Jahnai Raynor? Towson University.

The fraternity began providing scholarship and education awards 15 years ago to students studying in Bermuda and abroad.

Funds for scholarships are raised through various events hosted by Kappa Alpha Psi including their annual pee wee soccer tournament and golf tournament.

President of the chapter, Nelson Bascome said, ?It?s a surprise to see young people who they say aren?t doing anything doing something. This is an example of young Bermudians doing well?.
