<Bt-4z32>Gem of a collection from designer Alex
THE latest collection of jewellery by local designer Alexandra Mosher has its debut at Rock Island Coffee tomorrow. Her spring line features more than 200 pieces of exquisitely crafted gemstone jewellery — stunning marquise-cut green and purple amethyst, lemon citrine and royal blue kyanite, unique laser-cut blue topaz and golden citrine, faceted tourmaline, labradorite, garnet and rose briolettes, champagne and peacock-coloured freshwater pearls, lipstick-red branch coral and mother of pearl.
“With this collection I really stepped up the stones,” Ms Mosher said, explaining that she handpicked each one from the multitudes of fine gemstones available in New York’s Diamond District and handcrafted it to her own design.
“I was initially buying online, but not having the same sort of luck — you can’t touch and feel and know the stones, and pick the best. I now have some merchants in the district who have gorgeous gemstones, so I go to them frequently.
“The stones are wonderful. They really catch the light and are flawless, without any inclusions. I think what I’ve created is more fun than what you find in the average jewellery store.”
Ms Mosher graduated with a BA in studio art and French from Massachusetts’ College of the Holy Cross. She later moved to Aix en Provence, France, where she focused on oil painting, concentrating on the Masters’ techniques.
On her return to Bermuda, she “began experimenting with sculpting figures from wire mesh (and) was intrigued with the results, for each piece recalled the female form in folded undulations of matte metal.”
Fascinated, she began deconstructing her own jewellery and redesigning it to suit her taste. Gémeaux by Alexander Mosher was born from that initial experimentation.
“Designed for a woman with confidence and flair, Gémeaux jewellery is versatile and makes a statement. This is something for everyone.”
Indeed, her designs run the gamut of taste — flower and leaf combinations recall nature; chandelier earrings and opera necklaces speak to glamour, while Ms Mosher’s mod swing earrings and sleek, designer-cut cabochons are appreciated by those who prefer a more contemporary style.
“Each Gémeaux creation is handmade in limited quantity to ensure exclusivity. A great deal of thought and effort is put into making each piece.”
The stones, she added, “come from all over the world” to better create “unique and inspired jewellery that, like the right perfume, tantalises the wearer as well as the viewer”.
Gémeaux by Alexandra Mosher will soon be available in select stores on the island although the designer admits her first love is creating pieces for specific clients.
“I do tons of custom work. I love to be involved in creating jewellery with the client and have helped (them) design pieces, pick out the stones. It’s very rewarding.”
And new rewards are on the way — for clients. Ms Mosher embarks on a trip through Europe next month for new inspiration and different design techniques.
“I’ll still be doing custom work,” she insisted. “I’ll be making pieces on the road — I can either bring them home with me when I return briefly in June, or FedEx them in.”
Ms Mosher’s work will showcase between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. at Rock Island Coffee on Reid Street. For more information visit www.alexandramosher.com.
