Good Friday kite fight

A St. George's youth must wait until November to learn his fate after he pleaded guilty to assault and wilful damage in Juvenile Court yesterday.

The panel heard how the 15 year old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, became involved in an argument with a man on Good Friday, after the man's son and the accused were flying kites.

According to Crown Counsel Cindy Clarke, the youths' kites became entangled, causing the defendant's kite string to snap. Then, said Ms Clarke, the accused took the boy's kite and an argument ensued between him and the boy's father.

"Others then joined in and the complainant said he saw (the accused) kick his car door," she said.

Ms Clarke said the man also stated that he saw the defendant throw a child's bike at his wind shield, causing it to shatter.

The estimated damage of the car was over $3,000.

While the youth admitted breaking the man's car window, he denied kicking the door and gave a different version of events.

"After the kite snapped I asked the boy if he was going to give me his kite or another one and he said that I could have that one.

"His father threw the first punch," he said.

Magistrate Tyrone Chin ordered a social inquiry report to be conducted and order that the youth return to court on November 20. He was bailed for $750 and one like surety.
