Government leaves employees behind in infested building

Staff members from the Ministry of Education have been left working for a month in an office infested with termites, trash and insects.

Last month the majority of staff members at the Ministry of Education moved out to an office on Dundonald Street across from Masters.

But a few staff members were left behind, in less than ideal conditions, at the old headquarters on Point Finger Road.

Yesterday, Chief Environmental Health Officer Estlyn Harvey looked into the conditions where the three remaining staff members are still working.

What she found was unsatisfactory, she said.

Mrs. Harvey said the stench of trash is pervasive as bags pile up in the corridors every week and the staff don?t know how it even gets there.

The building, leased to the Government by the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, is infested with termites and insects, she added.

?These people are working under conditions which are not conducive to good working conditions,? said Mrs. Harvey.understands that the staff left behind see roaches daily and are concerned that areas of the office damaged by Hurricane Fabian have not yet been fixed.

Staff are also not linked to the Ministry?s main computer system.

One staff member described working in the present conditions as ?challenging?.

?But we?re doing the best we can,? she added.

The remaining staff are understood to be moving out within the next week.

Chief Education Officer Dr. Joseph Christopher has not returned calls for two days on the matter.

The hospital has leased the Point Finger Road building to Government for many years.

The Government Departments presently in the office are expected to move out within the next year so the hospital can take over the building as part of its master refurbishment plan.
