Governor now has ?tsunami? report

Police Commissioner George Jackson has a completed review of his department?s response to the tidal wave false alarm earlier this month and that report was delivered to the Minister of Public Safety?s office has learned. However a Ministry spokesperson said: ?The report will be shared with the EMO before being released (to the public).?

That is expected to happen early in the New Year. The EMO ? Emergency Measures Organisation ? will then report to the Office of the Governor. Governor John Vereker says he agrees with Public Safety Minister David Burch, the man who commissioned the review, that the findings should remain private for the time being.

The Governor also said he will receive a full report from the EMO. ?I will not be commenting on the review until then,? he told in an e-mail message.

It is unclear exactly what kind of insight is expected from the EMO, especially since, according to published reports, it was not involved in the public safety scramble on December 9.

The day after the event an unnamed source pointed blame at the Police Service for ?a major breakdown in communication? after officers hastily evacuated people from the West End. It appears no Police official checked first with the Bermuda Weather Service. On the other hand, another highly placed source seemed to congratulate first responders: ?It is always better to be safe than sorry.?
