Govt. may expand child development services

Housing Minister Terry Lister

The Ministry of Education is considering expanding childhood development services with the formation of an early childhood team.

In remarks to the House of Assembly yesterday morning, Education Minister Terry Lister (pictured) praised the success of the Child Development Programme, now in its 27th year of operation.

He spoke about the services offered by the programme including an interactive parent/infant support group, a family counselling programme, as well as partnerships with King Edward VII Memorial Hospital and Lindo's .

He said that if the new team is developed, it would encompass staff from the Childhood Development Programme as well as education officers.

The new team would be in charge of delivering early childhood services at local nurseries and pre-schools. "No final decision has been made, but we feel that such a team, working in partnership with parents and schools, would put our young people on the road to success," said Mr. Lister.
