Govt. to give used computers to underprivileged kids

The Ministries of Education and Telecommunications have come up with a novel way of ?recycling? refurbished computers ? they?re giving them to middle school pupils who don?t have access to this technology at home.

In the House of Assembly yesterday Terry Lister said about 100 computers which had been retired by the Government, but were still functional and able to provide a useful service, would be made available to public middle school pupils free of charge.

However before then, Information Technology Manger, Anthony Outerbridge and his staff at the Department of Education will be responsible for clearing data and old programs, and for installing new software.

Mr. Lister said they would also configure the Internet connection when this part of the programme could be arranged. For now the Government will invest up to $230 in each unit to upgrade the memory and install a modem.

?From what I understand, the young people identified by their schools are excited about their new acquisitions and have committed to using them well,? he said.
