A Rastafarian grandmother cried in the witness box at Supreme Court yesterday as she recalled being arrested for allegedly smuggling $8,150 worth of cannabis into Bermuda.

Priscilla Delores Williams, 60, told the court she had had no idea that a liquor box she had been given in Jamaica to bring back to Bermuda for a friend actually contained 163.9 grams of the drug in a hidden compartment.

Williams, of Bulkhead Drive, Warwick, is alleged to have imported the cannabis and to have possessed it with intent to supply on January 5 this year.

She told the court her brother had bought her a ticket for the three-week Christmas trip to Jamaica as a birthday present, and that it was the first trip she had made there in more than 30 years.

?I had a good time until I got back to Bermuda,? she said, explaining that a person named Noel White who she met at the Gloriana Hotel in Montego Bay asked her to bring the box back for a woman named April Showers.

She explained to the jury that April Showers, who is from Bermuda, was a friend of hers for the past 20 years and was the girlfriend of Noel White.

Williams also said that she had not looked inside the box before bringing it back into the country but that she believed it contained wine.

All the passengers coming in on her delayed Planet Airways charter flight were searched at Bermuda International Airport, and the box was found by Customs officers to contain cannabis as well as three bottles of rum.

Williams maintained throughout her testimony that she had had no idea she had brought the drug into the country.

She said of a Police interview that took place: ?I was confused, afraid and upset. I had been crying because I was going back home to see my children and my grandchildren and something was going to happen to my life at the age of 60.?

And she added that after spending two days in custody: ?I was in a daze for months.?

Williams denies the charges against her, and the case continues.
