Green light sought for sewage plant

The final go-ahead to build a sewage treatment plant at Southside is being sought by the Bermuda Land Development Corporation.

The new plant is expected to treat household and commercial waste and dispose of the resulting effluent through a deep bore hole just off Orange Hole Road in St. George?s.

A previous building at the site on the former Baselands has been demolished but the concrete floor slab has been retained to be incorporated into the proposed sewage treatment facility.

The BLDC is seeking permission to build the plant, which includes a 40-foot by 50-foot prefab steel frame building, on a 2,000-square foot plot which lies east of Clearwater Middle School in St. David?s.

Using a Zenon Modular Membrane Bioreactor to treat waste water with sodium hydroxide, it is estimated the plant would deal with an average of 20,000 gallons per day, although it could handle up to double that amount if needed.

Once the waste is treated, it is planned to pump it into a deep-sealed bore hole or to a grey tank for irrigation.

An application for final Planning approval has been made by the BLDC to the Development Applications Board and will be decided upon in the coming weeks.
