Guard reports close encounter with a pit bull
The quick thinking of a security officer prevented her co-worker from being attacked by a Pit Bull yesterday morning.
Frederick Minors, 52, who works for Safeguard Security was completing a round on Belco's property on Serpentine Road when he got the call on his radio.
This is the third time in recent weeks that a person has encountered this breed of dog while on the job.
The Hamilton Parish man recounted what happened: “About 1:30 this morning, I was heading back to my post when the supervisor operator, Ms Maureen Fox, alerted me that she had picked up on the surveillance camera that a Pit Bull was roaming loose in the vicinity and that I should try to get out of the area.
“My heart was pounding. I had nowhere to go except up some steps that were on the side of the building I was near. I had a helmet on my head and I was just hoping that the dog would not find me.”
Mr. Minors said that the dog ran across the base of the steps without incident. He said he was thankful for he believed that the dog would have attacked him if given the chance.
This was not the first time Mr. Minors had seen the dog on the premises. He said that on several occasions the owner of the Pit Bull walks the animal at odd hours in the night - without a leash. He indicated that once he saw the man unleash the dog and allowed it to roam the length of Belco's property, sometimes for great lengths of time.
Mr. Minors added that people who do this should at the very least, muzzle their dogs so that if they get away from them they would not be able to hurt anyone.
The thankful man expressed his gratitude for his co-worker.
“ I am very happy that she was doing her job. Thanks to her, I am okay.”
