Home school proponents ready petition
Parents, teachers and students from a number of home schools will present a petition today to Education Minister Paula Cox over plans to introduce tighter controls.
More than 50 people are expected to gather outside the House of Assembly at noon for the presentation, in a bid to persuade Government to halt its plans to limit home schools to no more than four students.
Teacher Peggy Baptiste, who has 15 students, said the home schools would continue to lobby Government until their concerns were addressed.
She said: "We are presenting this petition because we would like people to know that we are really serious about the future of our children and we would like Government to continue talks with us."
Government said from September this year, it will impose the policy of no more than four students per home school. Anyone with more than four must apply to become a licensed institute or face closure.
The Ministry said, while it respected parental choice, it wished to ensure a safe and productive environment for all children, not just at public schools.
However, the home schools have complained that they will be forced to ask some students to leave if Government sticks to its policy, and said many will no longer be viable.
