Homeowner ready to fight BLDC

A mother is gearing up to fight for her family home after the Bermuda Land Development Company (BLDC) filed a writ for repossession.

Coreen Tucker has been battling the company for two years after complaining about mismanagement of her Southside property.

She got a $250,000 mortgage on the house after winning a 1999 lottery to buy one of the first budget houses on the estate but money was not paid to BLDC because of a dispute over the removal of a Belco transformer hut on the property.

The situation was complicated when a truck caused nearly $50,000 damage to the house.

On Wednesday lawyers for BLDC filed a writ for repossession.

Mrs. Tucker said she would fight the case herself after losing patience with lawyers who she blames for further complicating the row.

She said: "This is what it's all about - me being able to speak for myself and my family's needs over the rights of people with initials behind their name who aren't happy with someone who didn't pay a whole lot of money for the education they got.

"If this was about housing the Minister would have taken two minutes out to find out what's going on and the Minister of Works and Engineering would call back to find out what's happening and why this family is being threatened like this.

"It's about big business trying to get rid of a mouse who knows she doesn't have to pay for shoddy workmanship."

Mrs. Tucker who has a husband and son said she would not be paying rent if she lost her case and was evicted.

She said: "I will pitch a tent in everyone's lawns before I do that."

Mrs. Tucker said she was still waiting for the writ to be served after challenging the BLDC lawyers to give it to her on the steps of The Royal Gazette building.

BLDC lawyer Peter Driscoll, of Moniz, George and LaVigne, said he was still waiting for papers to come back from the Supreme Court Registry and promised Mrs. Tucker would be given more than the statutory five days' notice of the hearing which he predicted would be at the end of the month.
