Hospital staff receive praise

Dedicated hospital staff who cared for patients throughout Hurricane Florence - including those who helped deliver three babies without incident - have been thanked for their efforts.

More than 240 workers and several volunteers reported for duty at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital (KEMH) and the Mid Atlantic Wellness Institute last Sunday afternoon and remained there for more than 24 hours as the storm hit the Island.

Hospital bosses sent out a thank you memo to staff this week, praising them for a ?fantastic job?.

The memo read: ?Employees across the board went out of their way to respond, working as a team to provide whatever was needed. We thank each of you for your efforts.

?Without complaint, our employees worked throughout this period making certain all departments ran smoothly and all aspects of patient care were carried out without interruption.

?In addition to providing services for our patients, extra meals and places of rest had to be arranged for hundreds of staff who worked during the hurricane, as well as for 24 of their children, who spent the storm with us. Despite these increased responsibilities, our very busy staff pulled together brilliantly and made everything work smoothly.?

Hospitals spokeswoman Lena Ostroff was at work during the hurricane. She said that the hospitals did not lose any power and that patients received the same care as normal.

No elective operations were performed but surgeons were on standby at KEMH and patients who needed it continued to receive dialysis. The only disruption was that the air conditioning and some computers were turned off for a while.

?People were just phenomenal,? said Ms Ostroff. ?The reality was that there was a lot of hard working, committed people who showed up. Other people called in to make sure the wards were covered. Others were told to stay at home.

?Everything went incredibly well. It was just wonderful in the sense that it was nice to see people pull together. Everyone tried to go out of their way.?

Harlean Saunders, acting director of human resources for Bermuda Hospitals Board, said staff who were unable to report to work on Monday because of the hurricane would still be paid for that day.

She added: ?Staff will not lose any vacation time or time owing as a result of Hurricane Florence.?
